With the official national weight limit at 40 tons, there are quite a few places on the books – such as Maine and Vermont – that are allowing up to 100,000 pounds on interstates. But not everyone is happy. Critics say that heavy trucks make things less safe because they are harder to control and stop and create more damage on the roads.
