Our partner of the month for July is Ray Gopher from Gopher Trucking and Excavating, Inc. We caught up with Ray to chat with him about how he got started in his trucking business and to find out what keeps him going.
Hi Ray, thank you for taking the time to chat with us. Please tell us a little more about yourself and your business. When and why did you get started?
I got started 5 years ago in 2011. I had been in the excavating business for a number of years but then decided to get into trucking. I had more trucks but now I’ve got one and I am making a good living.
What do you enjoy most about what you do for a living?
I enjoy the freedom to do my own things according to my own schedule.
What is most challenging about what you do for a living?
It’s challenging to navigate a system that is top-heavy with rules. Drivers can be off the road for the smallest of infractions. The trucking industry is being choked by rules and the net result of that will be fewer drivers on the road. If the economy grows by a few percent we’ll be in big trouble.
What advice would you give to someone just starting out in this business?
Learn the rules and follow them as closely as possible.
How do you keep a work-life balance?
I am lucky because I can load my bike or my boat on my truck and take some down-time when I need to.
Thank you so much for taking the time and sharing your story and the wisdom of your experience. Pay4Freight is proud to be your partner and we look forward to being that for many years to come.
